This book takes a nuanced look at building a sustainable transportation infrastructure and provides an overview of the harmful effect of various modes of transportation on the environment.

The environmental impact of transportation is significant. Transportation is a major user of energy, and it burns most of the world’s petroleum and is the fastest-growing contributor to carbon dioxide emissions. Although environmental regulations in many countries have reduced the individual vehicle’s emissions, this has been offset by an increase in the number of vehicles on the road and airways. Methods to reduce the carbon emissions of vehicles need intensive ongoing research. New means of transportation must be developed alongside greater energy efficiency. By globally reducing transportation emissions, Earth’s air quality will be improved; acid rain and smog will be reduced; and climate change effects will be reduced. The research collected here in this book is of vital importance for today and for tomorrow. It forms the foundation for a new approach to transportation.

Covering roadways, urban transportation, aviation, and fossil fuel alternatives, Transportation and the Environment: Assessments and Sustainability
  • considers the environmental impact of highway traffic and looks at road design infrastructure
  • examines the management of pavement network roughness to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • presents life-cycle impact assessments of the new bus rapid transit and light rail lines
  • looks at the assessed environmental impacts of transportation projects in the planning stages
  • examines ground transportation in urban settings, looking at travel time, vehicle fuel, and pavement maintenance costs
  • explores sustainable development and airport surface access
  • discusses different types of pure biodiesel fuel and the environmental impact of each
  • looks at the electric car as a suitable instrument toward sustainable transportation
  • examines non-edible oilseeds as an alternative to fossil fuels, with the added benefits of increasing national energy security, reducing environmental impact, and fostering rural economic growth

Edited by an expert in energy efficiency and conservation, this compendium volume will be valuable for transportation engineers, civil engineers, public policy professionals, energy researchers, and many others.
