Understanding current environmental issues requires having a critical eye to all information related to the release and distribution of chemicals into the environment. This new book offers scientists, researchers, and students an essential understanding of natural environments and the way in which they function by providing clear explanations of the fundamental aspects of environmental science and technology from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Written in a convenient and easy-to-read style, this volume covers the important aspects of environmental science and technology, focusing on the many issues that are related to the effects of chemical waste on various ecosystems as well as on pollutant mitigation and clean-up. The volume discusses several key environmental problems such as pollution, ozone layer depletion, acid rain, and global warming affecting the Earth’s atmosphere, aquasphere, and geosphere over the past four decades. The author takes an interdisciplinary approach to explain the environmental conditions of earth affected by physical, chemical, biological, and human interactions that transform and transport materials and energy.

The Science and Technology of the Environment is a ready-at-hand guide to the many issues that are related to the effects of chemicals on various ecosystems as well as to pollutant mitigation and clean-up that will be valuable to students at all levels as well as a refresher for scientists, researchers, policymakers, and others.

About the Authors / Editors:
James G. Speight, PhD
Energy and Environmental Consultant, Author, and former Visiting Professor, Laramie, Wyoming

Dr. James G. Speight has doctorate degrees in Chemistry, Geological Sciences, and Petroleum Engineering and is the author of more than 90 books in petroleum science, petroleum engineering, biosciences, and environmental sciences as well as books relating to ethics and ethical issues. Dr. Speight’s work is associated with the properties, recovery, and refining of reservoir fluids; conventional petroleum, heavy oil, and tar sand bitumen; the properties and refining of natural gas, gaseous fuels, crude oil quality; the production and properties of petrochemicals from various sources; the properties and refining of biomass, biofuels, biogas, and the generation of bioenergy; reactor and catalyst technology; and the environmental and toxicological effects arising from the use of energy sources.

Although he has always worked in private industry that focused on contract-based work, Dr. Speight has served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Mosul (Iraq) and the Technical University of Denmark and the University of Trinidad and Tobago. He has also held adjunct appointments and served as a thesis examiner for more than 25 theses. As a result of his work, Dr. Speight has been honored with many awards, including Diploma of Honor for the United States National Petroleum Engineering Society, “For Outstanding Contributions to the Petroleum Industry,” 1995; Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences, “For Outstanding Work in the Area of Petroleum Science” 1996; Einstein Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences, “In recognition of Outstanding Contributions and Service in the field of Geologic Sciences,” 2001; Gold Medal–Scientists without Frontiers, Russian Academy of Sciences, “In recognition of His Continuous Encouragement of Scientists to Work Together across International Borders,” 2005; Gold Medal–Giants of Science and Engineering, Russian Academy of Sciences, “In recognition of Continued Excellence in Science and Engineering,” 2006; Methanex Distinguished Professor, University of Trinidad and Tobago, “In Recognition of Excellence in Research,” 2007. Also, in 2018 he received the American Excellence Award for Excellence in Client Solutions from the United States Institute of Trade and Commerce, Washington, DC.
