This new volume, Real-Life Applications of the Internet of Things: Challenges, Applications, and Advances, provides an overview of the Internet of Things along with its architectures, its vital technologies their uses in our daily life and other domains, and associated challenges. The book also covers some advanced topics where IoT is combined with other emerging technologies, such as blockchain and cloud, which will bring a revolution in the era of IoT. Topics in the volume cover the many powerful features and applications of IoT, such as for weather forecasting, in agriculture, in medical science, in surveillance systems, and much more.

The first section of the book covers many of the issues and challenging arising from the Internet of Things. The section explores security challenges, such as attack detection and prevention systems as well as energy efficiency and resource management in IoT. Part II introduces various application areas of IoT, including the uses of smart technology in agricultural management, in healthcare diagnosis and monitoring, and in the financial industry. The third section of the book discusses the integration of IoT with blockchain, cloud, and big data and features some advanced topics. The variety of topics includes surveillance network technology, the shift from television to video streaming apps and the technology involved, using IoT–fog computing for smart healthcare, detection of anomalies in climate conditions, and even detection of illegal wood logging activity.

Monika Mangla, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Technology at Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College of Engineering, Mumbai, India. She has two patents to her credit as well as over 20 years of teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate level and has guided many student projects. Her interest areas include IoT, cloud computing, network security, algorithms and optimization, location modelling, and machine learning. She has published several research papers and book chapters (SCI and Scopus-indexed) with reputed publishers. She has also been associated with several SCI-indexed journals such as the Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences (TUBITAK), Industrial Management & Data Systems, etc., as a reviewer. She is a life member of the Computer Society of India and the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers. Dr. Mangla received her PhD from Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala, Punjab, India.

Ashok Kumar, PhD, is currently an Assistant Professor in Chitkara University Research and Innovation Network (CURIN) Department, Punjab, India. He has over 15 years of teaching and research experience. He has filed three patents and has published several publications in international journals and conferences of repute. His current areas of research interest include cloud computing, Internet of Things, and mist computing. Further, he is supervising four PhD scholars and two ME students. His teaching interests includes Python, Haskell, Java, C/C++, advanced data structures, and data mining. He has been a guest editor of the International Journal of Cloud Computing (Inderscience). Dr. Kumar holds a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from Thapar University, Punjab, India.

Megha Bhushan, PhD

Megha Bhushan, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the School of Computing, DIT University, Dehradun, India. She has four years of research experience as a Junior Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow under the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, Government of India. She was awarded with fellowship by UGC, Government of India, and was also a recipient of a Grace Hopper Celebration India (GHCI) fellowship. She has filed four patents and published many research articles in international journals and conferences of repute. Her research interest includes software quality, software reuse, ontologies, artificial intelligence, and expert systems. She is also the reviewer and editorial board member of many international journals. She received her PhD degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Thapar University, Punjab, India.

Sachi Nandan Mohanty, PhD

Sachi Nandan Mohanty, PhD, is working in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Vardhaman College of Engineering (Autonomous), Hyderabad, India. Professor Mohanty’s research areas include data mining, big data analysis, cognitive science, fuzzy decision making, brain-computer interface, and computational intelligence. He has received three best paper awards during his PhD studies and has since published 20 papers in SCI journals. As a Fellow of the Indian Society Technical Education, The Institute of Engineering and Technology, and the Computer Society of India, and as a member of the Institute of Engineers and IEEE Computer Society, he is actively involved in the activities of the professional bodies/societies. He has received several awards, including a Best Researcher Award from Biju Pattnaik University of Technology in 2019, Best Thesis Award (first prize) from the Computer Society of India in 2015, and Outstanding Faculty in Engineering Award from Dept. of Higher Education, Govt. of Odisha in 2020. He has also received international travel funds from SERB, Dept of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, for chairing a session at international conference USA, 2020. Dr. Mohanty is currently acting as reviewer of many journals, including Robotics and Autonomous Systems, Computational and Structural Biotechnology, Artificial Intelligence Review, and Spatial Information Research. He has also published four edited books and three authored books. He did his postdoctoral from IIT Kanpur in the year 2019 and earned a PhD from IIT Kharagpur in the year 2015, with an MHRD scholarship from the Government of India.
