Pathways to Modern Physical Chemistry: An Engineering Approach with Multidisciplinary Applications focuses on recent trends and takes a systematic and practical look at theoretical aspects of materials chemistry. The book describes the characterization and analysis methods for materials and explains physical transport mechanisms in various materials. Not only does this book summarize the classical theories of materials chemistry, but it also exhibits their engineering applications in response to the current key issues. Recent trends in several areas are explored, including polymer science, textile engineering, and chemical engineering science, which have important application to practice.

About the Authors / Editors:
Editors: Rainer Wolf, PhD
Vice Director of Sandoz Ltd. and Director of Research and Application for Polymer Additives (retired)

Rainer Wolf, PhD, is now retired as Vice Director of Sandoz Ltd. and Director of Research and Application for Polymer Additives. He has published in many international journals, including Die Makromolekulare Chemie, Tetrahedron Letters, Journal of Macromolecular Science, Journal of Polymer Sciences, Kunststoffe, Ullmann’s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, and others. He also presented at conferences all over the world, although most of his work is documented in many patents assigned to Sandoz Ltd., now Clariant Ldt. Dr. Wolf studied chemistry at the University of Mainz, a center of education in macromolecular chemistry in Germany, and obtained his PhD for his work on new polymerization catalysts. He continued his research in Mainz on rotatory dispersion and circular dichroismus of iodinepolysaccharide complexes. He also worked with the research group of Professor Carl Speed Marvel in Tucson, Arizona, USA, where he worked in the field of thermostable “laddertype” polymers with quinoxaline and oxazine units for use in space craft coatings. He also worked at Sandoz Ldt. in Switzerland, where researched polymer additives, especially phosphorusbased flame retardants, UVstabilizers for automotive coatings, and antioxidants, some of them still being used today.
