Reviews
“Modern biotechnology has made rapid strides in the development of technologies that have revolutionized healthcare in recent years. This field has its own challenges and ethical standards are needed to ensure the safety and efficacy of this emerging technology. Responsible use of modern biotechnology has the potential to unravel new treatments for several diseases leading to better health outcomes for the global population. Dr. Sheikh Umar Ahmad is a promising young scientist from Kashmir, India, pursuing postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, USA. His credentials as a biotechnology researcher are impressive. This book by Dr. Ahmad provides an extensive overview of the latest developments and use of modern biotechnology in the healthcare sector. He has assembled a team of experts for this book. The chapters are very informative, and they cover a wide array of topics, from basic principles of biotechnology to its application in healthcare. I believe that this book will be a good resource for readers interested in the potential of modern biotechnology as it pertains to healthcare. It will also encourage aspiring scientists to pursue careers in this field.”
—Prof. Nabiha Yusuf, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Alabama, United States

“Provides timely updates on several topics such as microRNAs in diagnosis and therapy, CRISPR-Cas based diagnostics, plant-derived antimicrobial agents, gut microbiome engineering, stem cell technology in regenerative medicine, and emerging immunotherapies. This book should help readers remain current on the rapidly changing roles of biotechnology in healthcare.”
—Gary S. Wood, MD, Founding Chair and Professor Emeritus and Founding Director, Skin Diseases Research Center, Department of Dermatology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA

Modern Biotechnology in Healthcare: Advances and Applications covers some of the most important and latest research trends and applications in modern biotechnology, with special attention on how modern biotechnology advances human healthcare. These ground-breaking technologies hold tremendous potential in the development of new tools and techniques that can in turn be used in the synthesis and production of novel biological entities with a potential to improve disease diagnostics in general and healthcare facilities in particular.

The chapters in the book explore

  • microRNAs as next-generation therapeutic and diagnostic agents
  • applications of CRISPR-Cas-based diagnostics
  • CRISPR-Cas as a genome-editing tool
  • engineered gut microbiomes for treating diseases
  • antibiotics and plant-derived antimicrobials for healthcare
  • stem cell technology and regenerative medicine
  • and more
Taking multidisciplinary perspective on these state-of-the-art biotechnologies, this volume provides a valuable overview for professionals, researchers, faculty, and students in many areas of biotechnology, medical science, and other health related areas.

About the Authors / Editors:
Editor: Sheikh Umar Ahmad, PhD
Postdoctoral Research Associate, School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA

Sheikh Umar Ahmad, PhD, is currently working as Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Dermatology, Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research, School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Wisconsin-Madison, United States, and is involved in research projects aimed at understanding the "Developmental Genetics of Planar Cell Polarity in Mammalian Skin.” With more than six years of work experience as part of a team, Dr. Ahmad completed his doctoral research studies at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu, India, where his research interests were focused on "Understanding the Interplay of Autophagy and DNA Damage Response Mechanism in the Regulation of Ultraviolet-(B)-Induced Skin Photodamage.” Dr. Ahmad’s thesis work mechanistically elucidated the role of interventional autophagy as a promising therapeutic strategy against the skin photodamage disorders. Dr. Ahmad published his research findings in various international journals of repute and presented his work at several scientific conferences. He was previously awarded for his research work and has received a Best Research Paper Award at the Annual Awards presented by CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu, India. In addition, he has also received numerous awards for his academic and research distinction, including Visiting Fellowship Award from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, United States; DST-INSPIRE Fellowship Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology Government of India; Gold Medal of Excellence for 1st class first in master’s degree from BGSB University Rajouri, India, among many other awards. He also serves as editor and reviewer for various international journals in addition to holding membership in several scientific organizations, including the American Association for Cancer Research, European Society for Photobiology, and International Society for Development and Sustainability and Health Physics Society (HPS). Outside the lab, Dr. Umar enjoys playing cricket and traveling on long expeditions. He is a nature lover.
