Mathematical models in the field of soil and water engineering have become essential tools for the planning, development, and management of land and water resources. They are increasingly used to analyze quantity and quality of stream flow, groundwater and soil water, and different water resources management activities. Their application in the fields of soil and water engineering has expanded the horizon of innovative research. Modeling Methods and Practices in Soil and Water Engineering, the first volume in the new book series Innovations in Agricultural and Biological Engineering, discusses the development of useful models and their applications in soil and water engineering. The book contains 12 chapters spreading over three parts: Modeling Methods in Soil and Water Engineering, Research Innovations in Soil and Water Engineering, and Irrigation Management of Crops.

The first section covers various modeling methods, including groundwater recharge estimation, rainfall-runoff modeling using artificial neural networks, development and application of a water balance model and a HYDRUS-2D model for cropped fields, a multi-model approach for stream flow simulation, multi-criteria analysis for construction of groundwater structures in hard rock terrains, hydrologic modeling of watersheds using remote sensing, and GIS and AGNPS.

The effects of climate change on water resources planning and management and sustainable urban drainage systems are discussed in the book’s second section. A specialized chapter deals with applications of remote sensing and GIS for watershed planning and management.

Irrigation water for agriculture is diminishing day by day, which affects rice production in many rice-growing countries. The third section addresses productivity of rice under deficit irrigation and suggests different water-saving irrigation techniques to help in obtaining optimum yield. Finally methods to estimate water requirement of different crops and performance of plantation crops in degraded watersheds under different conservation trenches are discussed.

The book will serve as a reference manual for graduate and undergraduate students of agriculture and agricultural, civil, and biological engineering and will also be valuable for those who teach, practice, and research soil and water conservation methods for agriculture.

Dr. Balram Panigrahi is an agricultural engineer with specialization in soil and water engineering. Dr. Panigrahi is presently Professor and Head of the Department of Soil and Water Conservation Engineering (SWCE) at the College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology (CAET), Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), in Bhubaneswar, India. He also served as Chief Scientist of the Water Management Project and Associate Director of Research in Regional Research Station of OUAT.

Dr. Panigrahi has published about 180 technical papers in different international and national journals and conference proceedings. He has written several book chapters, practical manuals, and monographs. He has also written two textbooks in the field of irrigation engineering. He has been awarded with 14 gold medals and awards, including the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for best post-graduate research in the field of natural resources management by Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi; the Samanta Chandra Sekhar Award for best scientist in the state of Odisha, India; and the Gobinda Gupta Award as outstanding engineer of the state of Odisha, given by the Institution of Engineers (India), Odisha state center. He has also received a Japanese Master Fellowship for pursuing a master of engineering study at the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. In addition to being the editor and an editorial board member of several journals, Dr. Panigrahi is a reviewer for many journals. He is the member of a number of professional societies at national and international levels. He has chaired several international and national conferences both in India and abroad. With 26 years of of teaching and research experience, he has guided several PhD and many MTech students. Dr. Panigrahi’s research interests include irrigation and drainage engineering, water management in rainfed and irrigated commands, and modeling of irrigation systems.

He obtained his BTech in agricultural engineering from Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, and his Master of Engineering in water resources engineering from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. He was awarded this PhD in agricultural engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India.

Megh R. Goyal, PhD, PE, is a Retired Professor in Agricultural and Biomedical Engineering from the General Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at University of Puerto Rico–Mayaguez Campus; and Senior Acquisitions Editor and Senior Technical Editor-in-Chief in Agriculture and Biomedical Engineering for Apple Academic Press Inc. He has worked as a Soil Conservation Inspector and as a Research Assistant at Haryana Agricultural University and Ohio State University. He was first agricultural engineer to receive the professional license in Agricultural Engineering in 1986 from College of Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico. On September 16, 2005, he was proclaimed as “Father of Irrigation Engineering in Puerto Rico for the twentieth century” by the ASABE, Puerto Rico Section, for his pioneer work on micro irrigation, evapotranspiration, agroclimatology, and soil and water engineering. During his professional career of 45 years, he has received many prestigious awards. A prolific author and editor, he has written more than 200 journal articles and textbooks and has edited over 25 books. He received his BSc degree in engineering from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India; his MSc and PhD degrees from Ohio State University, Columbus; and his Master of Divinity degree from Puerto Rico Evangelical Seminary, Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, USA.
