This important volume provides a comprehensive overview of hepatotoxicity and medicinal plants used for protecting the liver and curing liver toxicity and liver diseases. To date, there has been no extensive resource on the plants that are used in this capacity, both in traditional medicine and in modern medicine. This book, Handbook of Research on Herbal Liver Protection: Hepatoprotective Plants, fills that gap. It presents information on the medicinal plants used in traditional medicine (both codified and noncodified) and in ethnomedicine, including the plant parts used and methods of use and dosages. The phytochemicals extracted from medicinal plants, screened and used in modern medicine for liver protection and curing liver problems, are given in detail. The volume discusses the medicinal plants screened for hepatoprotection, and the methods of screening are given as well. Methods of assay for screening the medicinal plants are also presented. Pullaiah, PhD, is a former Professor at the Department of Botany at Sri Krishnadevaraya University in Andhra Pradesh, India, where he has taught for more than 35 years. He has held several positions at the university, including Dean, Faculty of Biosciences, Head of the Department of Botany, Head of the Department of Biotechnology, and Member of Academic Senate. He was President of the Indian Botanical Society (2014), President of the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy (2013), and Fellow of Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences. He was awarded the Panchanan Maheshwari Gold Medal, the Dr. G. Panigrahi Memorial Lecture Award of the Indian Botanical Society and the Prof. Y.D. Tyagi Gold Medal of the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy, and a best teacher award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. Under his guidance, 54 students obtained their doctoral degrees. He has authored over 50 books, edited 20 books, and published over 330 research papers, including reviews and book chapters. His books include Advances in Cell and Molecular Diagnostics (Elsevier), Ethnobotany of India (5 volumes, Apple Academic Press), Red Sanders: Silviculture and Conservation (Springer), Monograph on Brachystelma and Ceropegia in India (CRC Press), Flora of Andhra Pradesh (5 volumes), Flora of Eastern Ghats (4 volumes), Flora of Telangana (3 volumes), Encyclopaedia of World Medicinal Plants (7 volumes, 2nd edition), and Encyclopaedia of Herbal Antioxidants (3 volumes). He was also a member of the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Professor Pullaiah received his PhD from Andhra University, India, attended Moscow State University, Russia, and worked as postdoctoral fellow during 1976–1978. He has 11 years of teaching and research experience and has published more than 55 research and review papers in various reputed indexed national and international journals. He has also presented more than 15 research and review posters at national and international conferences. He is a textbook and book chapter author. He attended many conferences, seminars, symposia, workshops, and QIP programs.
