Reviews
“Composites are an important class of materials because they offer the possibility to tailor properties and functionalities over a wide range and for various applications. The volume provides a collection of reviews dealing in particular with different aspects of functional polymeric composites. Those may be defined as functional materials consisting of two or more chemically and physically different phases separated by a distinct interface, where at least one of the components is a polymer. The size of the different phases ranges from nano to micrometer scale and determines the properties. Several examples of functional polymer composites are discussed with emphasis on bio-based materials, polymer blends, and polyelectrolytes. This includes, for example, cellulose or chitin nanocrystal composites and blends of polyethylene with natural rubber for mechanical reinforcement as well as PEO/PMMA solid electrolytes for electrochemical performance. Several techniques like FT-IR and impedance spectroscopy as well as sensor applications are discussed in more detail. The book thus will be interesting for engineers and experts in those fields.
“While the topics of the book are quite diverse, the individual contributions provide detailed information on specific areas mostly in the form of reviews. The authors are experts in their fields, and one gets a perfect impression of the present state of research. This is particularly true in the emerging fields of bio-related composites containing micro- or nano-cellulose, nonofibrillar chitin or lignocellulosic biomass. Several aspects of gas sensors and polyelectrolytes are similarly presented. So the book represents a nice collection of important aspects of functional polymer composites.”

—Prof. Dr. Manfred Stamm, Physikalische Chemie und Physik der Polymere, Leibniz-Institut fuer Polymerforschung Dresden, Germany

“Functional polymeric composites occupy a privileged spot due to their important impact on a wide range of the new technologies that are currently used in our daily life, in different relevant fields, ranging from optical, biomedical, cosmetics to packaging, automotive, and construction. The chapters of this book address some of the recent research topics related to advanced polymers and composites. I warmly congratulate the editors for bringing together the different contributors to produce this original book, which will serve those who wish to learn more about these promising new functional polymeric composites.”
—Dominique Durand, CNRS Research Director Emeritus, Department of Polymers, Colloids, Interfaces, Le Mans University, France
