Reviews
“In this book, Al-Zidan explores the FDA letter categorization and pregnancy lactation labeling rule (PLLR) systems for rating drug risks in pregnancy. Recently, the health system has moved towards patient-centered care giving more value to patients’ decisions regarding their health. This book gives physicians and pharmacists the required information in a quick and easy way for proper informative patient counseling ‘using PLLR’ combined with their old familiar FDA letter categorization, so that both the patient and caregiver would be comfortable when sharing health-related decision making. I recommend this book for physicians and pharmacists.”
—Fawaz A. Alassaf, PhD, Department of Pharmacology, College of Pharmacy, University of Mosul, Iraq

This first-of-its-kind handbook offers crucial information on the safety of drugs taken during pregnancy. It covers an exhaustive list of common and less common drugs and provides for each drug the FDA letter categorization and newly approved “Pregnancy and Lactation Labeling Rule (PLLR)” systems for rating drug risks in pregnancy, imposed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In response to the PLLR, many experts around the globe pointed out that the abrupt switch from the widely used FDA letter categorization system to the new labeling regulations could negatively impact the decisions of healthcare providers regarding the prescription of drugs to pregnant women. Therefore, it is essential to provide healthcare providers with a credible source of information that connects the old-fashioned FDA letter classification and the new requirements of the PLLR rule. This volume is that reliable source.

Drugs in Pregnancy: A Handbook for Pharmacists and Physicians covers the pregnancy ramifications of using anti-infective, cardiovascular, hematologic, dermatologic drugs and drugs affecting the endocrine, central, autonomic, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal systems in addition to herbs, vitamins and dietary supplements. To enable the reader to develop well-informed knowledge about a drug safety profile during pregnancy, three sections of data have been provided for each drug: FDA Category, Risk Summary, and Further Reading.

This handbook is easy to use and will save the precious time of the healthcare providers by enabling them to promptly locate the drug(s) in question. Additionally, the handbook supports healthcare providers in comparing the safety profile of the desired drug with its equivalent(s) within the same pharmacological group.
